pints n flies…san pedro style

Yesterdays Pints N Flies was a little informal fly tying and beer drinking get together to help support our fly fishing buddy Shane’s son Devon’s educational fund. It was something we used to do in Santa Monica with all the local fly and conventional guys years ago. Yesterday’s was extra special and it took place at a really hip bar in downtown San Pedro called Godmothers. It was the classic setting; loud live music, world cup soccer on the big screen, beer flowing, salty San Pedro characters and the local fly guys tying flies and auctioning off great stuff to raise money for Shane’s kid, Devon. Special thanks to all the guys for coming out especially Paul, Tim and Randy who made long drives. There was  a lot of love in that room!  Thanks to James Dwyer who helped coordinate this event and location and took some real amazing photos that really capture the atmosphere. Click here to view Jame’s photos! We raised a little over one thousand for the educational fund! Please check the Shane Chung Memorial fund for updates… cheers

this email says it all…

Hi all
Nine years later, to the month, I finally got my corbina!!  :-)))   at 8:15 after low tide this morning on local beach with self tied pink Surfin Merkin with my two handed 5wt switch rod and self tied T-8 27’ head.
Little did I know that following my retirement and decision to try surf fishing, I was starting a Quest.  That first June 2005 morning as I stood in the surf with a trout outfit, I was seeing big fish around my feet.  But with a floating line, no stripping basket, and a wooly worm fly I was quickly tangled in kelp and the fish just kept swimming around me.   Those will be easy to catch as I deluded myself!  (Note – it was in almost exactly the same place – within feet –  I got my fish today – amazing)  I should have realized then that bad things were to come as I got back to the car and discovered I had flipped the parking receipt upside down and I did catch a $58 parking ticket.

The Quest short story has some positives and negatives:
Plus
I want to thank many for their help including the gang at South Bay Flyfishers, Al Q, Bob Middo, Rajeff Sports, and my family for putting up with my craziness over a fish.
Minus
Two trigger finger hand surgeries, three wrist cortisone shots, months of therapy, more wrong gear than I can calculate $$, bad casting mechanics, a long learning curve and bouts of frustration.

What a thrill my tight line was this morning!!
Don

This short documentary from Paul Pryor features Capt. Vaughn Podmore, a guide based in South Africa.

I just saw this on short video on MidCurrent and was very impressed by the production value and direction, not to mention it features my friend and local guide, Vaughn Podomore of SaltyFly charters.  Vaughn has been a supporter of our One Surf Fly over the years and is a really good fly tier too…

I am fortunate to know Jimmy over the years. We got to work together on his show logo when he first started on the Jimmy Kimmel show many years ago. I recently got to spend a little time with him, tightening up his double haul prior to his trip to the Bahamas that was a few weeks ago. Jimmy is a big trout fisherman so this was a real adventure for him. If you missed this, check out his monologue where he talks about catching a bonefish in Andros Island…its pretty hilarious!

ep sand flea…

photos by Al Q

photos by Al Q

here’s a fun little sand crab I have been playing around with lately that I am calling the ep sand flea. i am tying it on the gamakatsu #4 SL 11, with a larvae weight under the shank of the hook. I cover the entire larvae weight with orange thread then coat with tuffleye for durability. the fly turns over and rides hook up, the weight allows the fly to ride like a boat keel and rock from side to side giving the fly an erratic crabby movement. you can make them big or small and they are easy and fast to tie… corbina beware….

minus low tide, weekend wrap up…

Bean_highlights

The top two fish are courtesy of Jacob “BeanKiller” Ginter from Torrance, who in three outings has upped his corbina total to 5 and before this had never caught one. The man is on fire! The bottom two fish are by seasoned veteran Glenn Ueda, who got the bottom left one on my watch last thursday when he spotted a couple in the waves and got one to take the offering, great fish Glenn! Three fish were on surfing merkins, grey and pink. The bottom right fish was taken on a Solly Clouser tied by Jim Solomon on Father’s Day! Nice fish boys… The next good morning minus low tide cycle will start on June 27th!

an epic day…

AlQ_Jacob_web2

I just love it when a plan comes together, especially when it involves a friend that up in till this past Sunday hadn’t fair-hooked a sight cast corbina on fly. Jacob got in touch with me a few weeks ago about the possibility of fishing together and catching a corbina. He recently transplanted his family back to Torrance where he originally grew up from Utah. Jacob is not stranger to fly fishing, he used to guide up in Jackson Hole, drifting his clients to trophy trout. He is a stick! Last week we walked the beach for a few hours during poor conditions in the hopes of seeing a few fish but really didn’t have any good shots. Short wave intervals, cold water and some salad made it difficult, so it was an early breakfast. This past weekend we were graced with sunshine during the noon low tide which gave us the window we were looking for. Any time there is over head sun during a low tide cycle, in June when the temps are near 70, is a good thing when targeting beans. We changed locations from the previous week based on a good report I received from the corbina patrol. I got to the beach and immediately began seeing fish lit up with the afternoon sun. Jacob had arrived earlier and was further north of me so I called him on my cell so we could meet up and fish together. The weekend beaches in LA tend to be crowded which made this a pure combat urban fishing zone. You pick your slot to cast, sometimes waiting for onlookers, surfers, dogs or kids to walk by so they do not get in the way of a backcast. Very exciting and this adds to the difficult factor. The conditions were near perfect with a blue colored, well defined trough running parallel to the beach and long uninterrupted sections of clear foot deep sand bottom tickling the shoreline. We only get a handful of these days each year and Jacob stepped right into it. We were seeing twos, singles and occasionally a group of three or four fish. Jacob rod goes bendo and puts his first ever bean on the sand. We fist pump, take a few pics and release the fish unharmed. I told Jacob that I really wished I could be with him for his first fish that was now history. Then he proceeded to nail another larger fish which he expertly played to dry sand.  He had two under his belt but wasn’t done. We decided to split up. As he walked back north to where he parked, he noticed a group of ten fish. I just so happened to call him as I was in my car and he said, “dude i have ten fish in front of me and they won’t eat the fly” I responded, “keep casting, there has to be one dumb one in there, stay on them.” Ten minutes later, Jacob calls, me and says, “I got him”. Ok, so Jacob gets a trifecta, three beans in the middle of the day on a crowded beach on perhaps his really first day of sight fishing for corbina. That is sick! I would classify that as an epic day on the beach! Way to go pal!  PS: I hooked one fish and it popped off but this day wasn’t about me, it was about Jacob and how he will never be the same!

pastel paintings that will seduce you…

pastel drawing by zaria forman

The artist highlight for June is a young artist by the name of Zaria Forman. Her finger paintings are spectacular. Using just her fingers, she sculpts and sketches these beautiful and delicate sea landscapes with pastel. She has mastered weather and water, two things I hold close to my heart as an angler. Check out more of her work here!
