fishy fridays…
we need more horsepower…
I remember back in the early nineties meeting Rod Harrison and Dean Butler at the San Mateo show in the bay area. They were real characters and very knowledgeable fisherman. Lefty had just been down to Australia to do something for the tourism board of Australia and got to go to New Guinea to fish for the Black Bass in the rivers with Rod and Dean. I believe I still have an old VHS tape Lefty gave me from part of that trip, it is crazy how hard those fish pull…enjoy the story, it is a classic…
local bassing around…

the water temps were closer to 64 degrees, the fish finder was a little off. But the suspended fish were accurate. Photo by Al Q
Our friend Mike Wicen had no mercy fishing plastics on Saturday morning. He out fished me and my buddy John at least two to one to the fly, landing many quality size fish. The deeper sinking, larger plastic swim baits were the ticket. The color plastic they preferred was a green, grey bait. The fly colors we got bit on were chartreuse/white, anchovy/white, and brown/orange. The water temps are beginning to rise and the bass are starting to suspend, it should only start getting better and better as we head towards July.
just another early local morning surf session with the boys…
got to walk the beach this morning with a couple of buddies. my left arm is undergoing some physical therapy so I decide to just stick to taking pictures and not wave the long rod. nice conditions, clean water, warm weather. the tide was not the best, it was a falling tide into the low. we did see a nice pod of corbina in shallow water, but they spooked out and vanished right after we stumbled upon them. a good sign that the fish are beginning to be active and finding the sand crab beds. the boys landed a bunch perch to 12 inches and one yellowfin croaker. unfortunately no halibut…afterwards we enjoyed a nice breakfast together, Jim gave us a lesson in music theory and after a few laughs later I was off to work. what a great way to start the day!
june 8th, lake henshaw, throwdown

Twelve pounds of golden goodness, John Hendrickson of the San Diego Fly Shop displays a fine carp recently landed on a fly at Lake Henshaw, which will be our host lake for the Carp Throw Down on June 8th….
For more information on the Carp Throwdown please visit our website! Last year’s tournament found us in a wild hopper hatch with many fish caught on the surface. Can’t wait!
congratulations to michelle pardon…
on a pending women’s fly fishing igfa record corbina on 16 pound tippet, caught this past mother’s day in our own south bay.
conceptual fly fishing…
Playing off the beautiful hand-painted fish finishes on Abel’s custom fly reels, I conceptualized this image by dropping an actual Abel reel onto a pencil drawing of a trout. I entitled it “putting the soul into fly fishing” I was going to do a redfish and a striped bass as well. Unfortunately this design was not chosen for a tee shirt but maybe it will resurface as an ad campaign or a poster some day, no pun intended.
