thanks for those who showed up to see Zino’s great “big bonefish” presentation at Marriotts yesterday at 12:30pm. we had a nice turnout and Zino covered a lot of great information. my favorite part of his presentation was the underwater footage of some of the flies Zino likes to use for the solitary big double digit bonefish that lurk the flats of Hawaii. the thin lizzy was unreal, underwater…we even came up with another pattern based on some of Zino’s feedback which has been entitled the micky mantis. it is really easy to tie and the addition of silly legs as a wing will give this fly some extra movement without stripping the fly, a key element in enticing larger fish. stay tuned for the micky mantis…

calamari friday

calamari squid fly tied by Al Q. © 2012 photo by Al Q

squid are great all around versatile baits found in oceans worldwide. they are fun to tie. I have finally got some time to play around with the new articulated shanks by fishworks. i tied this squid last night using a 4/o mustad tarpon hook in the rear and then attaching it to the shank by clipping the hook onto the shank. this is a very easy system to build a long squid. the materials i used in this fly were: tan ostrich herl dotted with purple and orange markers, large doll eyes attached on each side with a gob of goop, enrico puglusi large orange brush, sf rainbow blend, lead wire, orange crystal chenille over the shank, and mono thread with tuffleye finish.

the prescription!

I just sent out a few of my Sili-Crabs to a good buddy back east to target permit on the flats. These crabs legs are hand crafted out of a artist woodcut block, sprayed with release and then poured with a fast cure silicon. I can color them silicone pigments or after they cure with water-proof markers. Once the legs are made the rest of the fly is pretty easy to finish. I will try to put up a tying sequence soon. My inspiration for these realistic crabs were the Hiromi crabs which set the bar for crab flies a few years back. Hiromi hand cut the legs for his crabs individually out of rubber gloves. My tend to be a little more production style. When I do the article on these I will show how these can be weighted in various ways.
