Another fine day at the Long Beach Casting Pond alongside many good fishing friends and mentors. We were fortunate to get a beautiful day, not too hot, not too much wind, perfect for being outside or inside and enjoying the sport of fly fishing. We had around 100 guests during the course of the day.

This was the first year we added a donation and raffle with the help of the FFF Southwest Council for covering some of our expenses and helping to support Algalita.org.

Thank you Michael Schweit, Melinda, Janet, Nick, Analiza, and all the FFF crew. We were fortunate to have Capt. Charlie Moore enlighten us all with his new film, as we all explored the floating plastic desert in the Great Pacific Gyre. Check out algalita.org for more information.

Special thanks to Alex Ramirez for bringing us a Redington rod, Sage reel and fly line to our raffle and sharing his fantastic line of fly rods for everyone to test out.

Thanks to Larry and Cecila of the Wilderness Fly Fishers for providing lunches for our guests. John Van Derhoff, Jim Solomon, Michael Maloney and Bob Middo for their fantastic fly casting demonstrations. Matt Abrams, Alex Cady, Teena Carlos, Mike Centofanti, Kevin Green, Vaughn Podmore, & Dave Valadez for their hand skills at the vices and their donations on fly sales.

Bernard and Rebecca of Par Avion for their screaming set of Pulp Surf vibrations. Caroline Beghin-Kircher for her wonderful artwork.

All the helpers and volunteers and a special shout out to Capt. Charles Moore for doing the courageous work that noone seems to want to do but is so important for keeping our planet whole.  Please forgive me if I left anyone out – Al Q

come one, come all, to the greatest ball of them all!

FFF_DHB_post

Our good buddy Alex Ramirez was kind enough to bring down some new fly rods from Sage and Redington for everyone to field test and some shades to look through from Smith/Optics as well…

Bring some cash if you are interested in buying flies from our awesome fly tiers this year and there will be a special used fly gear table with some great deals for those looking for discounted used fly rods and misc. gear.

fleye master…

The long-awaited Fleye Design by Bob Popovics and Jay Nichols has hit the streets. It’s been three years in the making and it was worth the wait…

Well there are many adjectives for the way Bob Popovics approaches fly tying; innovative, creative, intense attention to materials and details, user friendly and proveyer of deadly patterns. I have known Bob for over twenty years and since the day we met in San Mateo, he has always been bigger than life, a mentor, a friend and a kindred spirit. His approach to fly tying has literally changed my life. I have watched Bob’s journey over the years and have been fortunate to be by his side during some of the development of his now famous patterns. I have been tying his stuff since the first time we tied a surf candy together. Bob has always had a very practical approach to fly tying, he studies the baits, understands the way predators stalk and feed on them, then uses the best materials based on their movement or durability to represent his flies. He repurposes ordinary materials into masterpieces like “The Beast” entirely made of bucktail. If you are serious about fly fishing in saltwater, you need to have a copy of his new book entitled, Fleye Design: techniques, insights, patterns. It is beautifully laid out, with tons of great photos and step-by-steps. A great resource for beginners, and novice tiers including myself. Way to go BobPop, you hit it out of the park…..again. and if you don’t have a copy of Popfleyes, Bob’s first book, that is where is all began and is a must for every fly fisherman’s library…don’t walk, run to get them both.

Order them here on Amazon!
