awesomeness…

This was a post my buddy Glenn wrote (below) and he pretty much summed it up…  i will add Glen is a class act, a great fishing partner and fly fisherman.  Watching him sub do this beast in hostile conditions (rocks, kelp) was a thing of beauty! it was good times and their was no luck involved, experience always pays off. I was glad I was there to share this great moment with him…

“Under a rising moon, cutting through a persistent yet manageable wind chop, it wasn’t long before we were speed drifting our beloved wall, peppering casts between kelp lanes, with Al’s “Thin Lizzie” doing damage early. Then it slowed with intermittent flurries, to break up long periods of laughter and storytelling, as the bass geared up for their nightly assault. Drifting further east under calming conditions and with the Bee Gee’s “Night Fever” thumping from the Queen Mary, things switched ON. Shouts of, “BIT ON THE SINK!” and “THERE’S A DOUBLE” covered the Edgewater for the next ninety minutes. It was good, REAL GOOD. Eventually satiated and with reddened bass thumbs and big fat grins on full display, we blasted home at 5,000 rpms under the orangey glow of the harbor lights. Thank Al for a fun-filled evening of calico bass on the fly.”

This year’s poster child and corbina savant Glenn Ueda with corbina number 24(left) and 25(right). Glenn is having what we call a dream season, sort of like when Ted Williams batted .403!
It ain’t over! I think he still has a little fire left in his stick and a few more to be caught before this season starts to slow down…couldn’t happen to a nicer guy! Way to go dude!

Well, this morning I got an email from our good friend Zino and this photo popped up on my screen. All I could do is smile. Our good friend Peter Koga (who is a fly fishing machine) has recently experienced some bad luck with a few health issues, has been side-lined and cancelled many fly fishing trips over the last four months. He has been a real trooper though, staying positive and walking the beaches sighting corbina for all of us. I know it was killing him not being able to throw flies at them. We all all pulling for him to get well soon, so he can do what he loves best, fly fish. Well as you can see, Peter had a fly rod in his hand this morning and got a beauty off the beach on a grey merkin. I hope this is the beginning of many more days on the water pal, great job Peter! That corbina represents the power of positive thinking…you have inspired all of us!

spanish fly, rip…

Click here to see see Jose’s boat in all it’s glory! I was very fortunate to meet Jose many years ago and share fried chicken for lunch while our flats skiffs were tied together off the Northshore of Montauk while sight-fishing for stripers and bluefish. Jose was a neat guy and bigger than life. When I used to fish the keys I always saw his SeeVee in the racks down at the Keys boat launch, it was always a  familiar site. After Jose unfortunate passing years ago due to a terrible low pressure system incident during takeoff in his personal plane, the Spanish Fly was later sold to a Julio Mesa in Mexico.

Julio Mesa’s 39′ See Vee Spanish Fly totaled by fire

Recently the Spanish Fly just went up in flames in Mexico while it was being stored in dry dock.  A sad end to an amazing boat with many fish stories…

the new August edition of California Fly Fisher just hit the streets. photo by Al Quattrocchi

For those of you interested, I am very humbled by getting a beautiful profile article written about me entitled, California Confluences in the August edition of California Fly Fishers magazine. Pick it up, not just because I am in it, but because CFF is a great publication that really captures the California fly fishing scene. The August issue just hit the streets and I got some nice feedback from some of my dear fly fishing buddies who personally emailed me last week. The Confluence interviewer was compiled and edited by Bud Bynack who shares east coast roots and asked me some fun questions. I would like to personally thank Richard Anderson (publisher & editor) for giving me the opportunity to contribute another article as well, entitled: Fly Fishing the Surf, Getting Started which also appears in the same issue. See ya on the beach  – Al Q

the hunt for #20…

photos by glenn ueda

photos by glenn ueda #18 on left, #19 on right

there’s been a familiar face popping up on this blog lately and for good reason. His name is Glenn Ueda and he is an accomplished fly angler that has fished all over the globe chasing fish with the fly. I had the pleasure of meeting up with Glenn on the beach a few times this year and it’s been fun fishing together. Glenn told me it’s his second year sight-casting beans, which is unreal. Glenn is having a PB banner corbina season with a total of 19 faired fish on fly. We are all pulling for him to hit twenty, maybe 25? (grin) Where ever he goes, corbina take cover! Way to go Glenn…
