this one is especially sweet…
Well, this morning I got an email from our good friend Zino and this photo popped up on my screen. All I could do is smile. Our good friend Peter Koga (who is a fly fishing machine) has recently experienced some bad luck with a few health issues, has been side-lined and cancelled many fly fishing trips over the last four months. He has been a real trooper though, staying positive and walking the beaches sighting corbina for all of us. I know it was killing him not being able to throw flies at them. We all all pulling for him to get well soon, so he can do what he loves best, fly fish. Well as you can see, Peter had a fly rod in his hand this morning and got a beauty off the beach on a grey merkin. I hope this is the beginning of many more days on the water pal, great job Peter! That corbina represents the power of positive thinking…you have inspired all of us!

spanish fly, rip…
Click here to see see Jose’s boat in all it’s glory! I was very fortunate to meet Jose many years ago and share fried chicken for lunch while our flats skiffs were tied together off the Northshore of Montauk while sight-fishing for stripers and bluefish. Jose was a neat guy and bigger than life. When I used to fish the keys I always saw his SeeVee in the racks down at the Keys boat launch, it was always a familiar site. After Jose unfortunate passing years ago due to a terrible low pressure system incident during takeoff in his personal plane, the Spanish Fly was later sold to a Julio Mesa in Mexico.
Julio Mesa’s 39′ See Vee Spanish Fly totaled by fire
Recently the Spanish Fly just went up in flames in Mexico while it was being stored in dry dock. A sad end to an amazing boat with many fish stories…

For those of you interested, I am very humbled by getting a beautiful profile article written about me entitled, California Confluences in the August edition of California Fly Fishers magazine. Pick it up, not just because I am in it, but because CFF is a great publication that really captures the California fly fishing scene. The August issue just hit the streets and I got some nice feedback from some of my dear fly fishing buddies who personally emailed me last week. The Confluence interviewer was compiled and edited by Bud Bynack who shares east coast roots and asked me some fun questions. I would like to personally thank Richard Anderson (publisher & editor) for giving me the opportunity to contribute another article as well, entitled: Fly Fishing the Surf, Getting Started which also appears in the same issue. See ya on the beach – Al Q
the hunt for #20…
there’s been a familiar face popping up on this blog lately and for good reason. His name is Glenn Ueda and he is an accomplished fly angler that has fished all over the globe chasing fish with the fly. I had the pleasure of meeting up with Glenn on the beach a few times this year and it’s been fun fishing together. Glenn told me it’s his second year sight-casting beans, which is unreal. Glenn is having a PB banner corbina season with a total of 19 faired fish on fly. We are all pulling for him to hit twenty, maybe 25? (grin) Where ever he goes, corbina take cover! Way to go Glenn…

slipping and sliding…

determined Glen decided to put more money in the parking meter and not leave sliding fish which were all over the place on friday morning. he was rewarded with a pretty fair-caught corbina that slurped a small pink merkin. photo by Glen Ueda.

My buddy Jon Nakano doesn’t waste any time and sticks what later was revealed as a shovel nose. love the bent rod over the moon. photo by Al Q

I had the pleasure of mentoring Nick Blixt on the beach this past weekend. He hooked two fish but we couldn’t seal the deal… we will get them next time Nick! Photo by Al Q.

the south swell foamed up the flats, making seeing incoming fish difficult but it was easy seeing them bolt off the flat when the water thinned out. photo by Al Q

the mid day sun allowed for some classic sight fishing over this weekend . here’s a cool shot by my friend, Adam Lang.

Joe made a perfect cast into a little seam that held three fish moving right to left, as he stripped the fly through the kitchen the water exploded and the fish blew off the flat. The fish was unfortunately fouled, but Joe made a beautiful cast and did everything text book to hook that fish and put it on the sand. Photo by Al Q.
patriotic beans photo gallery!
Here are some weekend highlights from some of our fly fishing friends that were gracious enough to email me some pics…

Fourth of July corbina sight-casted and landed on a classic old school set up by Al Q. A Fenwick 8.6 ft, two piece 7 wt.fiberglass rod with an old 40s pfleuger click and pawl fly reel. I used a pink merkin, 12 foot leader with 8# tippet and the Rio Camolux intermediate fly line with 3% stretch. Photo by Al Quattrocchi

Nick Blixt comes really close to accomplishing his first faired corbina. Photo by Nick Blixt. The fish was chin hooked.

awesome pic by Michael Schweit (FFF southwest Pres) of our fly fishing buddy Jon Nakano lining up a fish in the skinny.
John hooked and landed three and a quarter corbina on July 5th. Three were faired and landed and one he handed off to a little kid that reeled a little took hard when the fish decided to run and popped!
A couple of notes: there’s a lot of guys having troubles hooking fish, out guessing themselves and switching flies, and getting frustrated. Me and Jon were talking about this over the weekend. well, listen up. this isn’t easy. I fish with the best corbina fly fisherman period and I learn every day. the one thing I can say is these fish do not always eat the fly so you have to really try to get as many quality shots as possible directly in front of their nose. They WILL eat if the fly is on their nose, unfortunately many new comers have a hard time getting the fly in the right location consistently. My advise; since it is really hard to get the fly on their nose with current, wave hydraulics, people walking by, etc. Don’t change flies…stick to using a merkin (pink is better for sight-fishing) , it works!!! That is one thing less you will have to think about is not trusting your fly. Trust this fly and worry more about casting accurately, this is the main reason many guys are not catching fish. You need to place a fly accurately at a moving target, this ups the game times ten! What I would do, is go out with your fly rod to the park or backyard and put a small dinner plate upside down at different distances, (use the same set up you take to the beach) then practice casting a hookless merkin at the dinner plates till you can make one cast and hit all of them. Play for beers with you friends, make it fun? the better you can judge distance and put a fly on a plate the more fun it is. this sight-fishing game becomes like shooting targets. stick with it, it will make you a better fly fisherman and you will be rewarded for the hard work! this next tide cycle will be awesome, so start practicing like right now! LOL
