Joe made a perfect cast into a little seam that held three fish moving right to left, as he stripped the fly through the kitchen the water exploded and the fish blew off the flat. The fish was unfortunately fouled, but Joe made a beautiful cast and did everything text book to hook that fish and put it on the sand. Photo by Al Q.

Al, love the site. Started surf fly fishing a few weeks ago and loving it – your site is a great resource (thanks for the Merkin tip! Landed 2 big spotfin croakers on it in San Diego this morning).
I notice that Glen Ueda, in a addition to being insane good on the fly rod, is not wearing a stripping basket. How does he manage the line?

i suggest using a stripping basket if you need to move alot and are just starting out. if you are in one area you can get away without it but I find myself always getting line wrapped around my feet. it is doable, but one thing i rather not be focused on especially if you are just starting out. some of the guys I fish with manage just find without baskets, its a personal choice. i use one 99% of the time.
Thanks Al. Yeah, my first few times I tried to manage the line with my hands which half worked and half was a disaster. Next I tried a chalk bag for rock climbing, bad move. The last 2 times I have gone I have used one I made from an Ikea basket and have been able to get the line out 40-50 feet. I love the basket, just curious. Glen is not even more gnarly 🙂
