magical moments…

Screen Shot 2014-01-31 at 9.50.02 AM

This video was just sent to me by SouthBay flyfishing member, Don Bell. It really shows us how beautiful fish behavior can be when we are lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time and witness the magic. This is very true for spending time on the beach or ocean. It is what connects me to water. Thanks for sharing Don! VIEW HERE!

every now and then I stumble across something that just blows me away. this blog is all about stuff that relates to water, sand, tide, & fish. when we are firing on all cyclinders, we try to inspire and take your breath away. well, here is a story about a very talented artist living up in the bay area by the name of andres amores. his design and sense of space using the natural landscape just makes me smile, especially since his art is temporary and frozen in time. hope you enjoy his website and article! I might need to get this guy down to the One Surf Fly, LOL http://www.viralnova.com/beach-art/

you can run but you can not hide…

This information comes to me from my fishing buddy John Whitaker. Information is power…

The state of California is completed under staffed and underfunded while poaching of game and fish is on the rise! What can we do as  individual sportsman? Here’s one small step that may may a difference, get your “Poachers Can’t Hide” card from the Sportsman Conservancy which is a non-profit out to make a difference. Read on, together sportsman must united or we will all be lose this game.

Department of Fish & Wildlife update!

The Sportsfishing Conservancy

Non-profit fishing/conservation organization The Sportfishing Conservancy has launched a new “Poachers Can’t Hide (PCH) program to give both California sportsmen and law enforcement another useful tool in the battle against poaching of fish and game across the state.

At the heart of this program is a laminated, wallet-sized PCH information card designed for sportsmen to keep on their person at all times.   Developed by The Sportfishing Conservancy in coordination with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, PCH is designed to augment the existing CALTIP program by spurring reports and, most importantly, make better witnesses of those who do report suspected poaching activities.   These cards are being handed out during meetings/presentations at various fishing clubs across the state. In addition, anglers can request cards through the mail by visiting www.sportfishingconservancy.org or by calling Outreach Coordinator Jenny Armstrong at 949.813.7831.
“The sportfishing community can often become divided over various issues, but as a whole, there are core values we generally agree on,” said Tom Raftican, President of The Sportfishing Conservancy. “One, we’re conservationists at heart who care about our state’s natural resources and wildlife. Two, we hate to see fish and game thieves get away with poaching – damaging our resources and hurting the reputation of legitimate sportsmen everywhere in the process. Our PCH effort and this simple wallet card is another tool we all can use to combat poaching activities – and it puts poachers on notice that we’re not going to look the other way.”
One important goal of the PCH card is to serve as a reminder for fishermen and outdoorsmen to be aware of what’s going on around them and to keep the 1-888-CALTIP hotline number right at their fingertips. The other is to provide a checklist that helps anglers provide the specific types of information that wardens need to follow-up effectively.   This includes things like physical descriptions, vehicle and/or boat registration numbers, direction of travel, etc.
Both The Sportfishing Conservancy and DFW wardens recognize that it’s often not possible for law enforcement to respond immediately to CALTIP reports, due to the small number of agents and the vast areas they have to cover.   However, if they have good information from reliable witnesses – the types of information highlighted on the PCH card – wardens can use this information to follow up, investigate and take action if warranted.
“We want fishermen to be good observers and be able to provide the types of information wardens need most to do their jobs. We also need to be very clear that we do not want any members of the public to confront suspected poachers,” said Raftican. “However, by remaining observant and reporting what we see, every one of us has the power to protect the resources we treasure and enhance the sporting lifestyle we all enjoy.   Poachers steal from everyone, and it’s up to us to make sure they can’t hide among honest sportsmen,” concluded Raftican.
The Sportfishing Conservancy welcomes the opportunity to make presentations to fishing clubs on the CALTIP program and Poachers Can’t Hide, including providing cards to all members. They will also mail cards to any anglers who request them through the website.

reclusive sardines…

Where have all the sardines gone? Is it a cyclical thing, are our local waters too cold? One thing we need to realize as fishermen is our fishing tactics may need to change with more squid and anchovies in the picture?

Most fly tiers including myself are always trying to think like fish. To understand the baits you are trying to represent you first must understand their relationship in the water and how predators perceive them. Dr. Aaron Adams explains the relationship of color and profile in fly tying to attract fish into feeding. Click here for the video! great info… Here is Dr Adams website, www.fishermanscoast.com  Take good notes! 🙂

end of the road…

baja_road_

Here’s a Baja update: This is a major bummer. It seems like there was an earthquake that destroyed the road to Baja. Luckily none was hurt or killed. This will take some time to repair. The location is probably 10-20 miles north of Encenada on the toll road from TJ.  The area is called Salsipuedes. If you are planning on towing your boat to Cabo or East Cape, think again. There is an alternate one lane road that leads towards the mountains! I have no idea how much of a delay in time it will take to divert this mess.

happy new year!

I tried to shake off the holiday insanity this morning and end the year with a little winter surf session with fly rod in hand and hopes of finding those elusive slab perch. A couple of good fishing buddies joined me at 6 o dark am! The air temp was 45 degrees and the first sound I heard after getting out of my friend Johns car was the rumbling thunder of a shore break, it wasn’t promising but we forged on.
We were fishing a new stretch of beach that another buddy told me to investigate. Well long story short, we found the big perch, when we found the bucket brigade. Two guys, six rods and two buckets overflowing with monster surf perch. The bait of choice looked to be mussels. We were only lucky enough to scratch a few nice ones on the fly. Another dude fishing the grubs had the same experience, they wanted the real deal.
Anyhow it turned out to be a pretty morning spent with some good friends and who wouldn’t like any year to end like that! Happy New Year to all who share this blog and I hope to see you on the beach this coming year with rods in hand!
