I tried to shake off the holiday insanity this morning and end the year with a little winter surf session with fly rod in hand and hopes of finding those elusive slab perch. A couple of good fishing buddies joined me at 6 o dark am! The air temp was 45 degrees and the first sound I heard after getting out of my friend Johns car was the rumbling thunder of a shore break, it wasn’t promising but we forged on.
We were fishing a new stretch of beach that another buddy told me to investigate. Well long story short, we found the big perch, when we found the bucket brigade. Two guys, six rods and two buckets overflowing with monster surf perch. The bait of choice looked to be mussels. We were only lucky enough to scratch a few nice ones on the fly. Another dude fishing the grubs had the same experience, they wanted the real deal.
Anyhow it turned out to be a pretty morning spent with some good friends and who wouldn’t like any year to end like that! Happy New Year to all who share this blog and I hope to see you on the beach this coming year with rods in hand!
happy new year!

The light in the first shot is fantastic…and the water looks other-worldly.

Those are pigs!! Dustin and I are throwing Game Changers at the stripers keyed on the trout plant at DVL tomorrow. Low success ratio. Go big or go home. Fitting start to the new year. I hope everyone gets that special fish this year or at least have another wonderful year living the sporting life.
Hey Randy! Good luck tomorrow, take a look at those wiggle discs, they will do the same thing as the game changers with less tying effort! The striper boys on the east coast love em! I just got a new 12 weight I need to break in this year, grin! I’ll be sending you some more flies this year.
