In 1919, chewing-gum entrepenuer William Wrigley, Jr. bought all the controlling shares in the Santa Catalina Island Company and became the largest shareholder of the island. He loved Catalina and invested million of dollars into promoting the tourism to the island. Catalina was only 27 miles across the blue Pacific from San Pedro. He hired a top advertising man named Otis Shepard and in 1939, Otis created the Doublemint Twins campaign. The rest was history.
