A rare catch on the fly, the california opaleye will put up a scrappy little fight when hooked in and around rock piles and jetties. they do eat flies on occasion. they have strikingly beautiful blue cobalt eyes that light up in the sunlight. on a recent outing with my buddy vaughn podomore, adam and I landed our first opaleye on fly. © 2012 photo by Al Quattrocchi
I hooked this fishes cousin, a Zebra Perch, on a sand crab fly in the surf off southern Orange County. Strong fighter and took out line. I was very surprised at its large size and how well it fought.
kevin: as far as exotics go, we had an epic morning with three opaleye, 4 sargo and one green kelp wrasse.
the green kelp wrasse was really beautiful, i will post a pic soon.
