new alabama state record…

DORA, Alabama- James R. Bramlett, 65, landed a 70 pound striped bass from the Black Warrior River near the Gorgas Steam Plant Thursday February 28, 2013. The fish was weighed on certified scales and officials and a fisheries biologist with the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources were at Bramlett's home today to make it official. The fish is 45.5 inches long and has a 37.75 inch girth. It tops the previous state record by 15 pounds that has stood since 1959. That fish was caught on the Tallapoosa River. The catch may become the new IGFA world record for a landlocked stripe bass. That record currently stands at 67pounds, 8 ounces. (Joe Songer/jsonger@al.com)

hooked for life….

mustad_art

Here’s a fun piece of art to brighten your day! This is an old promotional piece that someone did for Mustad  awhile ago. I think it is pretty awesome! Mustad hooks are the best selling hooks on the planet! Did you know that one out of every three fish caught in the world is on a Mustad hook? I love the new tarpon hooks for tying flies, they are strong and reliable!

In 1919, chewing-gum entrepenuer William Wrigley, Jr. bought all the controlling shares in the Santa Catalina Island Company and became the largest shareholder of the island. He loved Catalina and invested million of dollars into promoting the tourism to the island. Catalina was only 27 miles across the blue Pacific from San Pedro. He hired a top advertising man named Otis Shepard and in 1939, Otis created the Doublemint Twins campaign. The rest was history. Here are a few of the really neat designs and advertisements from that time period…

new tee shirt designs from Abel…

Screen shot 2013-03-15 at 9.53.27 AM

I am very excited to see these new tee shirts designs hit the street. Abel celebrates their 25th anniversary this year. I have been the proud owner of many of Abel’s quality products over the years and like the fact that everything they do is manufactured right here in Camarillo, California. I got to tour their facility a month ago and was very impressed by the fine attention to detail in every thing Abel puts out, from nail clippers to large arbor reels. Their  hand-painted series reels are amazingly done one at a time by skilled artists. Everyone as unique as a snowflake.

I designed these new shirts for Abel. My concept for these new tee shirts was to build a couple of fish completely out of Abel reel parts. The beauty is in the detail, something all Abel products never lack. Click here to order some shirts from Abel.

beauty in the eye of the beholder

Whenever I walk the beach or fly fish, i try to make a point of picking up the plastic trash that people leave behind or gets washed out through our local storm drains, especially after a good rain. Even though it doesn’t seem significant, I know it helps in a small way and I feel good about it. Our oceans are exploited and are ill. Everyone can make a difference. Check out these two articles about plastic in our oceans, a very interesting artistic perspective. Photos created by Goussin and Le Calvez and Soup a photo series that documents the pollution in our oceans by Mandy Barker. More disturbing photographic images by Chris Jordan!

big payday from mustad for the yellowfin tuna igfa world class tackle record. iphone photo by Al Q

One of the highlights working the Fred Hall show on Thursday afternoon was witnessing the award ceremony for the IGFA world class yellowfin tuna (427 lbs) caught in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico last September 18th by Guy Yocum. Guy used a Melton rod and Shimano Tiagra reel loaded with 100lb test. The tuna was caught on a chunk. Nice one boys!
