I’ll be offering fly-tying classes soon at La Casa de la Mosca (The House of the Fly), my newly renovated fly-tying room on Saturday, Dec 5. I can fit 1- 4 fly-tyers per session. Click here for details.
A group or private class is a great choice if you’re planning an exotic trip and need to learn specific patterns for it. There’s really nothing quite like catching a fish on a fly you tied yourself! I’ll supply all the materials and hooks—just bring along your own tying tools and vise.
Sessions run about two hours, depending on how complex the flies are, and we’ll have fresh coffee ready.
A few weekends ago, I held my first session with a few guys prepping for an upcoming trip we organized to target big fall striped bass off the Jersey coast. We took on the Beast Fleye technique, reverse-tied bucktails, and built a bulkhead.

Everyone had a blast and made great progress on a tough fly! Here’s what the boys had to say:
“Miles Ahead of Any YouTube Tutorial” – Yuji
After years of tying flies, my private session with Al Q was truly eye-opening. Nothing on YouTube compares to receiving personalized, one-on-one instruction from a genuine legend of our craft. I left super stoked with the “BEAST” flies I learned to tie, and I can’t wait to get them on the water. Nothing beats catching a fish on a fly you crafted yourself!
“Invaluable Real-Time Guidance for Even Seasoned Tiers” – Captain Tom Jones
Even after 20 years of fly tying, reading books, and watching videos, nothing compares to Al’s in-person instruction. Having a master correct my technique in real time saved me hours of trial and error. The nuanced tips and tricks Al shared opened up a whole new world of complex fly patterns for me. Thank you, Al, for the incredible instruction—I’ll definitely be back for more!
“60 Years Later, a True Master Revitalized My Tying” – Rick
My group session with Al Q at Casa de la Mosca breathed new life into my 60-year fly-tying journey. Under his expert tutelage, I crafted the famous ‘Beast’ fly and learned the true art of saltwater patterns. I am completely motivated to practice at home and can’t wait to return for another session
PS: Please sign up for my new newsletter for fishing tips, events, classes, and more. You will receive a FREE PDF download on how to tie one of my original surf patterns: The Q’s Beach Bug!
Cheers -Al Q
